It starts as a string of bizarre deaths — people who locked themselves in, alone, no sign of anyone else, staring into shattered glass. Optometrist-turned-grief-counselor Marlowe Quist gets dragged into it sideways when a client dies this way the day after describing a dream where the figure in the mirror moved a half-second too late. Marlowe doesn’t believe in much. But she’s started catching her own reflection lagging, just barely, in shop windows and dark phone glass and the dead screen of her TV.

The words on the wall are the same every time, backward, patient, addressed to no one and everyone. The police want a man. Marlowe is no longer sure that’s what this is. She knows she should stop looking — stop checking mirrors, stop testing the lag, stop standing in the dark to see if the thing on the other side stands too. She covers every mirror in her apartment. Then, at three in the morning, she takes the sheet off the big one in the hall and says hello.
