Each victim is missing exactly one finger, taken clean, preserved in honey the way you’d put up summer fruit. The jar passes forward like a baton — found in the next target’s mail, the next target’s purse, the next target’s child’s lunchbox — always tucked beneath good chocolate, always a courtesy and a sentence. Patrol officer Hadley Vance catches the case because she’s the one who opened the first box, addressed to the precinct, addressed to her.

The killer collects. That’s the cold center of it — a man building a set, one digit at a time, each gift a promise that the chain runs through you next. Hadley starts tracing the jars backward through a city of people who all received chocolate and never thought twice. Then her own mailbox clicks shut one evening with a familiar weight inside, ribbon and all, and she stands on the porch holding it for a long time before she lifts the lid.
