Description

The Ashline runs north to south, the same train, the same platforms, the same crush of commuters every morning. People fall. People jump. The city counts them as a sad statistic. The timing of the falls says otherwise.

Transit safety analyst Priscilla Vane spends her days watching the numbers nobody else reads, and the numbers on the Ashline have started to lie. The official story is a suicide cluster — grim, but explicable, the kind of thing cities quietly manage. Priscilla pulls the timing instead and finds a rhythm too even for despair: a push here, a stumble there, always at the gap, always in the half-second the platform is too packed to see a hand at the small of a back.

There’s no trace. No witnesses that hold up. Just the gap between train and platform, and a feeling in the morning crowd that one of the bodies pressed against yours is doing the math. Priscilla takes her findings to the transit board and gets thanked and dismissed. So she starts riding the Ashline herself, every rush hour, standing exactly where they fell, daring the crowd to show her its face.
