Description

Each body is arranged to match a single page from a medieval anatomy plate — every classic injury laid into one figure, the old “wound man,” brought up out of the woodcut and into the morgue.

In a tired college town built around a famous old medical library, the dead are staged with grim scholarship: this one bearing the arrow, that one the blade, the next the burn, all keyed to the same antique illustration of a body suffering every harm at once. The killer isn’t improvising. He’s working from a source.

Rare-books archivist Lucan Ferreira recognizes the plate the instant the police photos cross his desk — he catalogs the very manuscripts it came from. When the detectives ask for his help and the staging begins to follow the exact edition only he has handled, Lucan realizes the artist isn’t copying the book. He’s completing it.

Scholarly and savage, this is historical horror about old knowledge with a body count. Walton pairs brittle parchment and candle-grease with very modern terror. The woodcut wants to be finished, and it’s short one figure.
