Description

In the river district, three deaths in a month get written off as freak allergic reactions until pest control pulls a hidden hive from a ceiling that someone built by hand. Entomologist Lucan Marsh gets called in to explain the impossible: hives appearing overnight in apartments, offices, a locked church basement, each one seeded on purpose, each one left near a body swollen past saving. The killer moves through the city in a beekeeper’s veil that nobody questions and nobody can describe, trailing a private mythology about pollination and purpose and the work the swarm was made to do. Lucan finds the diagrams first — venom dosages, hive placements, a calendar of “blooms” that reads like a route. The next mark on the route is the block where he lives. He should pass the file up and stay inside. He goes to the rooftop where the hives are warmest instead.

Ecological horror with a sting of dark comedy, this one turns something small and golden and necessary into a patient instrument of death. The dread builds with the hum, and the hum is always getting closer.
