Somewhere in the library’s locked back room are books that should never be read — and someone is using them as instruction manuals. Every death copies a method from a forbidden page, and every scene comes with a tidy little book report left behind.

The deaths are baroque and bookish, each one lifted from some obscure, awful text — a method of poisoning from a banned medieval treatise, a trap out of a suppressed Victorian curiosity. Special-collections archivist Lionel Frye is the only one who recognizes the sources, because the only copies of those books in the city sit behind a locked grille in the room he guards. Someone has been reading where no one is allowed to read.

Beside each body: a few neat handwritten pages, summarizing the “text,” citing the method, signed with nothing but a call number. The killer treats murder as scholarship and the city as a syllabus. Lionel checks the restricted shelves and finds gaps — volumes signed out under names of people long dead, returned with pages marked. The next call number in the sequence points to a book he’s never let anyone touch. He should change the locks and call it in. He takes the book down himself, sits at his desk under the green lamp, and starts to read what the killer read.

Dark academia horror for anyone who’s ever felt watched in the stacks, this one finds menace in scholarship and a killer who kills by the book. The dread is bibliographic and total — and the reading list is nowhere near finished.
