He doesn’t want you to scream and he doesn’t want you to hear him coming. He sews the mouth shut, then the ears, and sets you loose to wander a world gone silent until it lets you go.

The first survivor is found walking a county road at dawn, alive, sealed and silent, a living sculpture of sensory nothing. After that they’re mostly found too late. Sign-language interpreter Wendeline Cho gets brought in to reach the few who live, to coax their hands into telling what their stitched mouths can’t, and what they tell her is worse than any sound: a man who works without anger, slow and surgical, who treats the act like art and the victim like a medium.

He’s making something — a series, a statement, a private exhibition of silence — and each piece is a person turned into an object of pure absence. The police want a description. His survivors can only sign the same three shapes, over and over, that Wendeline can’t yet parse. She knows she should hand her notes to someone with a badge and step back. Instead she sits with the newest survivor late into the night, hands moving in the lamplight, getting closer to the shape of him, while somewhere out there he selects the next quiet thing.

Artistic, claustrophobic horror about the terror of being cut off from the world while still inside it, this one finds dread in the absence of every alarm we rely on. The fear is the silence — and the patient man who composes in it.
