Description

A pressed flower arrives in the mail, flat and dry and beautiful, with no note. A few days later, you’re gone. Everyone assumes it’s about love — they all dated the same person, after all. It isn’t about love at all.

They have one thing in common, the missing: each of them, at some point, was with the same magnetic, much-loved local figure — exes, flings, the ones who got away. So when they start vanishing after receiving a single pressed bloom, the easy theory writes itself. A jealous obsessive. A spurned lover cleaning house. Florist Wendell Aoki, who supplied the rare flowers without knowing what they meant, gets pulled into the case as a witness and stays in it because the easy theory is wrong, and he can feel it.

The flowers aren’t trophies of jealousy. They’re a selection, made for a reason that has nothing to do with the heart and everything to do with something stranger — a purpose Wendell only begins to sense when he realizes the blooms are matched to the people with a botanist’s precision, as if each victim were chosen for a trait they never knew they shared. He’s pressed flowers like these himself, once, for a stranger who paid in cash. The next bloom that arrives is on his own counter. He picks it up and turns it over, looking for the thing he missed.

A mystery that bends toward the deeply uncanny, this one dangles the obvious motive and then pulls the floor out. Quiet, fragrant, and wrong in a way you can’t name until it’s far too late.
