Description

Noon: a fall. One o’clock: a fire. Two: something with water. He keeps to the clock like a man with a train to catch — a different method every hour, exactly on the minute, twelve deaths in a single day. The thirteenth is where the rules break.

Dispatcher Sela Ortiz takes the first call at 12:01 and the second at 1:00 on the nose, and by the third she’s the only one in the building who’s noticed the timing. Her sergeant thinks she’s pattern-hungry, seeing shapes that are not there — until 3:00 arrives and so does the body, punctual to the second, and the room goes very quiet.

Twelve hours, twelve methods, no two alike, no wasted motion. The city scrambles. The clock does not care. And buried in the rhythm is a thing Sela can’t shake: the man isn’t killing for pleasure or rage. He’s counting toward something, and the thirteenth death — the one that won’t fit the pattern — is the only one that’s the point. She has until midnight to figure out who it’s for. She picks up the phone.
