Paper Boats

Description

He only comes when it rains. They find them face-down in gutters and flooded fields and three inches of bathwater, and every single one has a folded paper boat tucked into a pocket, still dry.

The town of Welkin Falls gets a hundred and ten inches of rain a year and a drowning every storm season nobody wants to count. Officially, accidents. People slip. Creeks rise. The river takes what it wants. But coroner’s assistant Dov Halloran has been keeping his own tally, and his tally has a pattern the official one doesn’t: the boats, always the boats, creased from the same careful hands.

When the rain comes early and a woman drowns in a parking lot under two feet of water with her car keys in her fist, Dov stops pretending it’s weather. He pulls the boat from her coat himself. It’s addressed. Not to her — to him. He could hand it to the sheriff and go home and let the next storm come without him. He unfolds it instead.

Atmospheric horror soaked to the bone, this is dread that arrives with the forecast. The killer is patient as a season, and the only warning anyone gets is the smell of wet pavement and a sky going gray.
