Something used to live in Cassidy’s closet. It killed the adults in the house one by one and never once touched the little girl watching from the bed. Twenty years later, she’s done being grateful.

Cassidy Brandt was seven the night the thing came out of the dark and rearranged her family, leaving her alive and whole and ruined in every way that doesn’t show on an X-ray. No one believed the kid. The case went cold, the house got sold, and Cassidy grew up into a woman who sleeps with every light on and a list of other survivors she’s been quietly collecting — children, now adults, each one spared, each one the only witness left in a house full of bodies.

The list has a shape to it. Same towns, same gap of years, same impossible mercy. Cassidy has spent a decade telling herself she just wants to understand it. That changes the morning she finds the latest name: a six-year-old boy three streets over, sleeping under a nightlight, in a house where the adults have started locking their doors for reasons they can’t explain.

A slasher built backward, where the victim becomes the hunter and the monster’s one rule is the most frightening thing about it. This is grief with teeth — the horror of being the one who got to keep breathing.

Leave the light on. It was never for the dark.
