No Such Lock

At every scene he leaves a key — beautifully made, clearly meant for something — that fits no door, no safe, no lock anyone has ever found. The locksmiths agree: this opens a door that doesn’t exist. Yet.

Old-city locksmith Margit Halloran gets called in to identify the keys because she’s the best blade-and-pin reader in the trade. Each one is real, custom, and useless: cut for a mechanism nobody can produce. The killings climb, the keys pile up, and Margit starts to feel them adding toward something — a set being completed.

When she lays the keys out together and they form a shape she half understands, a soft-voiced man appears at her counter with one more to add to the row. He tells her there’s only a few left to make. After the last key, he says, the door will be ready. And she has the only hands skilled enough to turn it.

Eerie and metaphysical, this is horror about thresholds that shouldn’t exist and the dread of nearly understanding. Walton makes cold brass feel like a held breath. You’ll wonder what the last key opens long after you stop reading.
