They pull the drowned from a different river each time, always with a single pearl resting on the tongue — payment, the old story says, to the thing in the water that collects what it’s owed.

Along the bayou parishes, the bodies surface clean and calm, no fight in them, each mouth holding one perfect pearl. The locals don’t talk about it above a whisper. Their grandmothers told them about the water spirit that takes its due, and somebody seems determined to keep the old account paid in full.

Marine deputy Odalys Prejean doesn’t believe in river spirits. She believes in the man wading the banks at dusk, choosing, weighting his offerings with care. But the more rivers she works, the more the currents seem to be choosing too — and the next pearl in the case bag is sized, she swears, for her own jaw.

Wet, ancient, and dread-soaked, this is gothic horror where folklore might be bookkeeping. Walton lets the silt and the dark water seep into every page. Some debts the river never stops collecting.
