Description

Before each death, a neighbor hears someone humming an old children’s tune — soft, off-key, barely there — that nobody can name, because the place it came from was shut and sealed long ago.

The killings in Marrow Hollow are scattered and senseless except for the song. Survivors and witnesses all describe the same crooked little melody drifting from somewhere just out of sight in the moments before. No one knows the words. The few who finally place the tune trace it to a children’s asylum that closed under a cloud and was never spoken of since.

Folklorist Edwin Asha came to town to catalog disappearing songs and finds one that doesn’t want to disappear. As he chases the melody through old records and older silences, he starts humming it himself without meaning to — and realizes he’s heard it before, in a place he was promised he’d been kept safe.

A gothic slow-burn built on a single unbearable tune, this is horror that gets in through the ear and won’t leave. Walton turns a lullaby into a countdown. You may catch yourself humming long after you close the book.
