Description

The letters come to the precinct written in the victims’ own blood, postmarked from towns that don’t exist, in the handwriting of people who vanished forty years ago.

Detective Salome Ngata has a drawer full of impossible mail. The ink is human. The stamps cancel from places no atlas lists. And the script, verified again and again, belongs to the long-disappeared — people gone since before half her squad was born, writing now as if no time has passed at all.

Each letter names the next person to die, and each one arrives the morning after it’s too late. Then a fresh envelope lands on Salome’s desk, postmarked from a town that shares her mother’s maiden name, addressed in a hand she’d know anywhere — her own, though she never wrote it.
